KERALA STYLE UPMA

My favourite Upma Recipe!

HOW TO MAKE RAVA/SEMOLINA UPMA?

Ingredients:

  • Rava/Semolina/Suji – ½ cup
  • Oil – ½ tbsp
  • Asafetida – 1 pinch
  • Mustard seeds – ¼ tsp
  • Urad dal – ½ tsp
  • Whole red chili – 1
  • Curry leaves – 1 spring
  • Ginger – 5g
  • Onion – 1/4th of an onion
  • Water – ¾ cup
  • Salt – ¼ tsp.
  • Coconut – ½ cup
  • Green chili, chopped – 1

Method:

  1. Heat the oil in a pan crack mustard seeds, then add urad dal to it. Once the color changes add the whole dry red chili and curry leaves and sauté for 5 sec.
  2. Add the chopped ginger, onion, asafetida and green chili and sauté for a min or two.
  3. Add the rava to it and fry it until the color starts to change.
  4. Now add the water to it little by little uniformly and stir it continuously. Smash the lumps if formed.
  5. Repeat it for 4 times with 3/4th cup of water for every 1 minute. Make sure no lumps are formed while repeating this process.
  6. Finally add the grated coconut to it, sauté for a min and off the flame. Continue to sauté for another min.
